Declaration Statesmanship

Book cover: 'Declaration Statesmanship: A Course in American Government'
Author(s):
Dr. Richard Ferrier
Dr. Andrew Seeley

Since the last review of this work, the name has changed, and it now comes with a teacher's manual and book of readings. It was formerly called America's Declaration Principles in Thought and Action. The main text has not changed, but is now printed in an attractive 8 X 11 comb-bound book.

Math-U-See

Book cover: 'Math-U-See'
Author(s):
Steve Demme

Math-U-See is a fairly new Math program, designed especially for homeschoolers, which runs from Kindergarten all the way through high school. The author is a former high school Math teacher who has attempted to balance a solid conceptual understanding of math with enough practice to let it "sink in." The program consists of a student text (workbook format), a teacher's manual, and optional practice sheets, special Math-U-See blocks and a teacher training DVD. I am very impressed with this program.

Lingua Mater

Book cover: 'Lingua Mater'
Author(s):
Margot Davidson

This is a complete English program written for 7th grade, but can easily be adapted for 6th and 8th graders as well. Although it is written to be used in one year, the author has given details of how it can be broken down into a two year program.

First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind

Book cover: First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind
Author(s):
Jessie Wise

Intended for use in first and second grades, the 200 completely-scripted lessons in this textbook are a complete guide in "How to Teach English to Young Children". The non-consumable book is actually a textbook for the teacher rather than the student. Lessons are completely secular and include portions of classic poems, stories and rhymes. Also included are original poems and stories as well as a few selections that have been adapted for young children. Pictures are black-and-white line drawings rather than photographs or color reproductions.

Father McBride's Teen Catechism

Book cover: 'Father McBride's Teen Catechism: Based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church'
Author(s):
Alfred McBride, O.Praem.

Teen Catechism is a nice entry point into the Catechism of the Catholic Church. In spite of its name, Teen Catechism could be used by an adult convert or any person who wants a solid introduction to or review of our Catholic faith. It follows the topic sequence of the Catechism, covering the Creed, the Sacraments, Morality, and Prayer in its 36 chapters.
