Out of the Silent Planet

Book cover: Out of the Silent Planet
Author(s):
C.S. Lewis
(Clive Staples Lewis)

The first story in the "Space Trilogy", Out of the Silent Planet begins with a man of such littleness that he is only known, for now, as the pedestrian. He is taking a summer holiday – trying to 'get lost' – from his philology professorship.

This is NOT a nail-biter yet.

Perelandra

Book cover: Perelandra
Author(s):
C.S. Lewis
(Clive Staples Lewis)

Perelandra is Venus. Ransom gets sent to Venus on a mission. Of course it takes him some time to get settled with the new surroundings again.

That Hideous Strength

Book cover: That Hideous Strength
Author(s):
C.S. Lewis
(Clive Staples Lewis)

Despite the fact that That Hideous Strength is the third book in the Space Trilogy none of it takes place in space. In fact it takes place in one of the most cozy, domestic settings you can think of. It is set in the small towns and College lounges of early 20th century England. The good guys live at St. Anne's – which is just a large home – and is named (here we go again with Lewis) after the Grandmother of our Lord. What could be more comforting?

The Little House Cookbook

Book cover: The Little House Cookbook
Author(s):
Barbara M. Walker

For all those of you whose mouths were watering at all the descriptions of food in the Little House Books (particularly Farmer Boy!), Barbara Walker (inspired by the requests of her own children) has done a great deal of research in compiling lots of recipes (over 100) and other background information on the meals from these books.

Catholic Math Activities

Book cover: 'Catholic Math Activities'
Author(s):
Mary Ann Grobbel

If you're looking for a way to liven up your math program or to bring in some painless math review you have to pick up this book. Catholic Math Activities provides dozens of math games that children actually enjoy playing and almost all of them only require dice and simple home-made material. The author makes use of children's interests by revolving the games around things such as baseball cards and animals. What really pleased me about this program is the clever way our Catholic faith was brought into these games.

God's Little Angels

Book cover: 'God's Little Angels'
Author(s):
Mary T. Waggaman

This lovely story is reprint of the 1905 book The Transplanting of Tessie. Little Tessie spent six years at a convent boarding school before becoming ill. She finds herself at her uncle's country estate where she recovers and, through many adventures, brings her relatives to the Catholic faith. All of our children enjoyed this touching story. The author writes vividly and with just enough suspense to keep the reader wanting more.

Rare Catholic Stories and Poems

Book cover: 'Rare Catholic Stories and Poems'

Make sure you have a hankie close by when you read these books. These faith inspiring stories surely must have contributed to the steadfastness that Catholic children displayed years ago. The stories in both volumes include main characters that are young and old, male and female thus appealing to everyone. Each story is short enough to be read by an average 4th grader in five to ten minutes. Follow up comprehension questions range from simple recall to more the more thought provoking type that would open the door to many wonderful parent child discussions.

Easy As 1, 2, 3

Book cover: 'Easy As 1, 2, 3: A Catholic Overview of Science For the Primary Grades'
Author(s):
Nancy Nicholson

This program provides families who like to use living books with a Catholic framework from which to study science. It is not a textbook but rather is 40 pages, of which approximately half are outlines, that are three hole punched and ready to go into your notebook. The parent that uses this will find the eleven units of science outlined very handy for creating their own program and clearly laid out so that they can tuck personal notes and activities into their notebook using the 40 pages as their point of organizing.

The Children's Book of Virtues

Book cover: The Children's Book of Virtues
Author(s):
William Bennett
Illustrator(s):
Michael Hague

This lavishly illustrated story-book was inspired by (and includes stories from) the best-selling story collection The Book of Virtues. This has been a favorite book in our family since my oldest was just two. The stories include: The Little Hero of Holland, the Tortoise and the Hare, The King and His Hawk (a cautionary tale about anger involving Genghis Kahn – my daughter liked this story so much that she had it almost memorized at the age of 2 1/2), St. George and the Dragon, St.
