Christian Heritage Art Program

Book cover: 'Christian Heritage Art Program'
Sr. Marie Vianney Hamilton, O.P.

When my friend came back from a Catholic homeschooling conference she was excited to present this set of DVDs to me, since I teach art at our local co-op. I shared in her excitement even before previewing it: a complete elementary school art curriculum, written by a Nashville Dominican sister? Wow.

Phonics Pathways

Book cover: 'Phonics Pathways'
Dolores G. Hiskes

I picked up Phonics Pathway because Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer recommended it in the first edition of The Well-Trained Mind. When I mentioned to a friend that I had bought this book, she wrinkled her nose and said, “Let me know what you think,” implying, of course, that I probably wouldn’t think much of it. Nothing could be further from the truth. I love Phonics Pathways.

First Communion Card Kit - Thank You Cards from Illuminated Ink

The First Communion Card Kit Thank You Cards come in packs of five, ten or twenty cards. The front of the card has a lattice work window with a design underneath. This card is unique in that the kit includes pieces of colored cellophane for the window panes to create a stained glass effect. Inserts for under the window include the words “Thank You” along with an inspirational picture of wheat, grapes, and a host for the child to color. This insert works as both a backdrop for the window and a blank inside for the card.

Precious Mary Paper Doll Set from Illuminated Ink

The Precious Mary Paper Doll Set comes with one 8” paper doll, Our Lady of the Kitchen, six attractive outfits (representing particular titles of Our Lady, like Our Lady of the Smile, Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Lourdes, etc.), a stand to tape on the back and a prayer. Everything is printed on card stock to color and cut. The artwork is lovely.

Making Things Right - The Sacrament of Reconciliation

Jeannine Timko Leichner
Kevin Davidson

In teaching the Sacrament of Reconciliation (whether as a homeschooler or as a catechist), it always useful to have lots of supplementary resources to catch the students and teach from a different angle.

This workbook from Our Sunday Visitor is a great addition to preparing students for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Through diverse word puzzles and activities, the student will gain a better understanding of the simple truths of why the Catholic Church includes Reconciliation as one of its seven sacraments.

Michael’s Golden Rules

Deloris Jordan
Roslyn M. Jordan
Kadir Nelson

Summer is here and it is baseball season. What better way to get in the mood than by reading an uplifting story about the real winning spirit of baseball, or for that matter, any team sport.

Michael’s Golden Rules written by Deloris Jordan and Roslyn M. Jordan, the mother and sister of Michael Jordan, is a story about developing a winning attitude, hard work, and playing “a good game.”

After Jonathan strikes out, he is taken aback when his best friend’s Uncle Jack says they played “a good game.”

“How could we have played a good game when we lost?” he wants to know.

Little Acts of Grace

Rosemarie Gortler
Donna Piscitelli
Mimi Sternhagen

This is a friendly little introduction for children to the small ways that they can show love to God. It's a combination of a book of manners (since there are explanations of how to behave at Church - and why) with a simple devotional theme that is accessible to young children. What a great idea!

La Boda: A Mexican Wedding Celebration

Nancy Van Laan
Andrea Arroyo

I love picture books, especially ones with warm, colorful, sweet illustrations. I love rhythmic, poetic language, made simple and accessible to children, and I love truly multicultural books!

This book brings all of these elements together, added to the universal theme of the sacrament of Matrimony. I couldn't help but love it at first sight--or at first reading.

An Alphabet of Catholic Saints

Brenda & George Nippert

Our family is crazy about picture books, saints books *and* alphabet books: this fantastic new publication fits all of the above. In fact, it was some time after my order arrived before I could get my hands on it: a Catholic homeschool mother who was over visiting opened the package and enjoyed reading it with a large sample size of our children before I could even see it!

Little Stories for Little Folks

Nancy Nicholson

Our third child, now a deep voiced high schooler towering me by several inches, learned to read with me when he was five years old using these little folding readers. This new edition has a new cover and some additional materials, but the readers themselves are the very same I used ten years ago! He looked at these the other day and could remember many of the stories.
